![]() ![]() The album’s rich string arrangements and off-the-wall lyrics have drawn comparisons to the Beach Boys‘ Pet Sounds. In 1999, the band published The Soft Bulletin, a return to more traditional genres. The album was issued as a four-CD set, each of which was supposed to be played simultaneously on different CD players. The band’s following album, Zaireeka, was released in 1997 and marked a significant change from their previous work, as well as from traditional methods of delivering modern rock music. Ronald Jones, however, found the continual touring to be too much for him, and he departed the band. ![]() It did not, however, sell as well as Transmissions. In 1995, Clouds Taste Metallic was released. The band’s track “She Don’t Use Jelly” was a tremendous smash, and The Flaming Lips have opened for bands including The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Candlebox. In 1993, the album Transmissions from the Satellite Heart was released. Ronald Jones and Steve Drozd took their place. Following the release of the album, Donahue quit the band to focus on Mercury Rev, and Roberts also left. Hit to Death in the Future Head, their first major label album, was released in 1992. The Flaming Lips signed with Warner Brothers in 1990. Wayne Coyne’s vocal sound began to take on a strained quality, comparable to Neil Young‘s, about this period. ![]() The band’s sound evolved with In A Priest Driven Ambulance, which was recorded on a $10,000 budget and featured tape loops and effects. Jonathan Donahue (of Mercury Rev) joined the band in 1989, and Nathan Roberts took over on drums from English. Oh My Gawd!!! was followed by Oh My Gawd!!! Telepathic Surgery was introduced in 1987, and Telepathic Surgery was introduced in 1989. Hear It Is, the band’s debut full-length album, was released in 1986 on Pink Dust Records. Their song “Do You Realize” is one of their most popular hits. Wayne Coyne (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steven Drozd (guitars, keyboards, bass, vocals), Derek Brown (keyboards, guitars, percussion), Matt Duckworth Kirksey (drums, percussion, keyboards), and Nicholas Ley (drums, percussion, keyboards) make up the current lineup (percussion, drums).
